Digital Labels Article

Print, foil, screen varnish, emboss, Lebone Paarl Labels’ newly acquired HP Indigo digital press and Abg Digicon Series 3 digital finishing machine rose to the occasion with unmatched application flexibility, turnaround time and stand out quality finishes in the recent production of their in house promotional label.

“Our clients’ labels are an integral part of their packaging, differentiating their products from those of their competitors,” explains Henk Jacobs, General Manager of Lebone Paarl Labels. “Spotlighting their brands through the delivery of exceptionally finished pressure sensitive labels is at the absolute core of what we offer and our approach is to give every job personal attention, as well as to push the boundaries of technology to raise the bar in label production.

“The HP Indigo’s superior technology delivers a digital colour printing process that matches the quality of gravure printing,” adds Jacobs. “With high resolution printing and perfect registration, this digital press can produce the distinctive labels envisioned by the designers.”  HP’s sophisticated technology offers efficient, versatile printing with up to seven colours. This includes the HP Indigo ElectroInk Silver for a metallic look similar to UV flexo silver inks as well as HP Indigo ElectroInk White for shrink sleeves. An inline spectrophotometer eliminates manual color calibrations and adjustments for perfect colour from the first label to the last one off the press.

Variable printing of unique elements such as text, images, barcodes, numbers and security features may be included. Brands can also leverage the capabilities of HP SmartStream Mosaic and Collage to make every label unique, creating an infinite number of designs, without impacting productivity, for irresistible shelf-appeal and maximum customer interactivity.

Once printed, the reel of promotional labels moved directly from the Indigo onto Lebone Paarl Labels’ customised Abg Digicon Digital finishing line where foiling, debossing and a high build screen printed gloss varnish were added in a single pass to incorporate depth and texture to the label. High build offers height to areas of labels that can never be flattened during the bottling process whilst the gloss brings out colour richness and contrast to the label’s matt background.

Warren Pietersen, Lebone Paarl Labels Pre Press Technical Manager, highlights that the motivation for the stock used was driven by the planned finishes. “We chose Paper Watermark FSC from Avery Dennison, a white, uncoated FSC® certified paper with wood-free and synthetic fiber, as it offers optimal performance for the debossing effect,” says Pietersen. “As part of the Avery Dennison Sensorial Collection, this substrate gives designers a tool to create premium wine, spirits and craft beer labels with visual impact that feel beautiful as well.” Paper Watermark FSC is suitable for both UV flexo and digital self adhesive printing with embellishments such as hot foil stamping, screen printing, debossing and embossing.

Embracing the rapid advancements in software and equipment ensures we will continue to reliably deliver exceptional quality pressure sensitive labels with innovative finishes faster and more efficiently through UV flexo and digital self-adhesive printing technologies,” concludes Jacobs. “This together with our Black Women Owned B-BBEE Level 1 Contributor status allows us to offer a truly value based production solution to the marketplace.”
