Petrochemical Labels: Create your own Petrochemical labels
Petrochemical labels form the basis of many products and their labels play an important role in protecting people, businesses and the environment.
Whether they are intended for domestic purposes or to be used in industrial environments, the labels for therefore must be very resilient to endure repeated usage and often harsh environmental conditions.
They contain vital information for safety, usage and traceability, therefore, can’t afford to fade or deteriorate over time. They also need to remain looking good to generate sales.
Selecting durable substrates for Petrochemical labels
Packaging oils, lubricants and other chemicals poses unique challenges. The label material must be tested for enduring adhesion on specific surface types such as painted steel or moulded polyethylene drums, in a variety of conditions and under exposure to mechanical strain and contact with chemicals.
Lebone Paarl Labels can assist you with the sourcing of suitable GHS compliant petrochemical label substrates that will stay functional for the life cycle of packaging with resistance to heat, solvents, chemicals, UV and water. These face stocks have passed BS5609 and the British Standard Section 2 and 3 label testing, including a three-month ocean exposure, as part of International Maritime Dangerous Goods certification. This range of heavy industrial labelling stock include.
Polyethylene (PE)
A tough, stretchy plastic film that is both water and temperature resistant. It is produced more optically clear than polypropylene and it is commonly used at Lebone Paarl Labels for the production of food product labels.
Polypropylene (PP)
It is similar to polyethylene plastic film but is stronger and more rigid. It has a higher temperature and is also chemically resistant. It is tear-proof, waterproof and is resistant to fading. Lebone Paarl Labels uses Polypropylene (PP) in different variations of thickness for the printing of retail packaging labels in South Africa.
Labelling for chemical safety and compliance
Multiple departments and pieces of legislation are involved and apply to the labelling of hazardous chemicals in South Africa. The departments of Trade and Industry, Environmental Affairs, Transport, Labour and the South African Bureau of Standards interact in the administration of chemical management.
The Consumer Protection Act No. 68 of 2008 (CPA) specifically requires that product labels have to clearly show their contents and trade details as well as describe any hazards. For instance if there is a risk that the product has an unusual characteristic or danger that an ordinary consumer wouldn’t be expected to know about, the supplier is compelled to bring these warnings and instructions to the customers attention in plain and understandable language.
Countries have different regulatory systems to classify chemicals according to their hazards and to communicate these hazards on labels and in Safety Data Sheets (SDSs). Differences in these systems has resulted in multiple classifications and different labels for the same product, leading to possible confusion and inconsistent worker exposure protection. The Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals, GHS, is a globally agreed system that harmonises classification and labelling of chemical products to protect people. It ensures that information on chemicals’ physical and health hazards is present and clearly understood across cultures, languages and literacy levels to facilitate safety during handling, transportation and usage.
According to GHS hazard communication requirements, manufacturers and importers of hazardous agents must apply a label that includes harmonised:
- signal words
- pictograms
- hazard statements for each hazard class and category
- precautionary statements
South Africa is in the process of mandating the implementation of the GHS within the country. The South Africa Bureau of Standards (SABS) subcommittee (National Committee for Standards for Dangerous Goods including Hazardous Chemical Substances and Dangerous Goods – classification, operational requirements and information) recommends that the latest edition of SANS 10234: 2019 be consulted when determining classification and labelling of chemicals in accordance with the GHS.
Printing options for your Petrochemical labels
Lebone Paarl Labels offers the versatility of both modern UV flexo and digital printing and finishing from its operation in Paarl in the Western Cape.
UV Flexo Self-Adhesive Petrochemical Labels
Lebone Paarl Labels’ fleet of UV flexo presses combine excellent print quality, high productivity and flexibility. They are ideally suited but not limited to longer print runs of commercial petrochemical labels. Printing can be done on wide variety of substrates and finishing such as laminating, embossing, foiling and die cutting can be done inline in a single pass.
Digitally Printed Petrochemical Labels
In digital printing, images are printed directly onto a substrate from electronic data without printing plates. It’s ideally suited but not limited to shorter print runs and labels requiring variable elements. Lebone Paarl Labels’ modern HP Indigo digital press offers flexible high-resolution printing of up to 7 colours that matches gravure printing. HP ElectroInk includes silver for metallic finishes and white for sleeves.
Digital printing allows for variable printing of unique elements such as text, images, barcodes, numbers and security features. Individually unique labels can also be created for maximum customer interactivity with HP Smartstream Mosaic and Collage. The inline spectrophotometer eliminates manual color calibrations and adjustments for perfect colour from the first label to the last one off the press.
Special Finishes
Special finishes such as foiling, high built varnish, embossing, debossing and die cutting can be added in one pass to digitally printed labels on Lebone Paarl Labels’ versatile Abg Digicon finishing line.
